In contrast to the broadcast media, the press is privately owned. Coverage of the opposition has widened since 1990, but press criticism of President Mobutu or the security forces is still generally muted. One newspaper's Kinshasa offices were burned down in 1993 after it published a strongly anti-Mobutu article. Overtly critical journalists face arrest or other reprisals.
